Since 1943, the Taxation Institute of Australia, has provided Members and the tax profession with extensive learning tools and an enormous knowledge base that has derived from practitioner driven education seminars, conventions, publications and the Structured Education Program. The Institute's website also offers Members access to over a decade's worth of content.
Today, with more than 15,000 Members, the Institute is Australia's premier professional tax body. Membership reflects this and includes a comprehensive cross section of leading tax accountants, lawyers, tax agents, managers and academics.
The Institute provides an extensive range of information and education services to Members as well as unique networking opportunities. Members are encouraged to become actively involved with the Institute and therefore, many of the products and services offered through the Institute come about from direct feedback from practitioners needs. The organisation's diverse nature, ability to provide an active forum and awareness of what is happening in the profession is its greatest strength, ensuring services that meet Members' wide ranging requirements.
All of the Institute educational events are recognised by other professional bodies and qualify for Educational and Continuing Professional Development and Mandatory Continuing Legal Education. The Institute's activities are managed by professional staff in its national and state offices.

Striving for a better Tax System
The Taxation Institute is the reasoned and respected voice of the Australian tax profession. The organisation's proactive nature and its research and policy initiatives ensure productive and high level relationships, not only with Members and the profession's leaders, but also with governments and media right across the country.
The Institute regularly generates submissions on new and proposed tax legislation, ATO and State revenue draft rulings and guidelines and major tax policy initiatives from all levels of government. The Institute is a leading participant on National and State Tax Liaison Group (NTLG) committees and contributes professional expertise to reviews of tax law and administration with representatives from the Australian Taxation Office (ATO), Treasury and other interested organisations.
The Institute's balanced and professional approach to issues ensures a close and influential relationship with both Commonwealth and State Revenue bodies and with key financial and industry media. These important strategic relationships allow the Institute to bring key industry matters into the public forum for discussion and debate.
Tax Research and Policy
The Institute's Research and Tax Policy Division has two principal functions -
- To assist members with technical information and provide updates on developments through the Institute's regular publications.
- To research and prepare comments and submissions on tax legislation and administration at Federal and State levels.
Other responsibilities
- Respond to Members' issues and raise them in the appropriate forum
- Seek Members' views on a range of tax issues and encourage public debate at Federal and State levels
- Represent the Institute and Members' interests on Government committees, including the National Tax Liaison Group (NTLG), its Sub-Committees and many other tax policy groups
- Disseminate Institute views by contributing technical columns and other material to the Taxation in Australia, The Tax Specialist and tax technical publications
