Welcome to the 23rd National Convention

From the President

The 23rd National Convention is to be held on 12 – 15 March 2008 at the Adelaide Convention Centre.

Over the years the National Conventions that have been held in Adelaide have been very well attended and enjoyed by all delegates. After a successful Convention in Hobart I would urge all Members to register early to secure a place.

Clearly, with the outstanding speaker list and challenging program, the lure of the vineyards and the wonderful ambience of Adelaide makes this Convention a must for all Members.

I look forward to seeing you at “The Greatest Show on Earth”

From the National Convention Chair

You need to be at the Adelaide Convention Centre from 12 – 15 March 2008. Why? Simply because you cannot afford to miss the outstanding technical program and the opportunity to catch up on the current practice issues that tax practitioners are contending with.

The National Convention has been growing in momentum in recent years. This always creates a concern that the next one cannot be as good as the last. With that in mind we asked Lachlan Wolfers to lead a team of experts to put together a program that was broad ranging and interesting for practitioners from all areas of practice. And, to the credit of Lachlan and the rest of the program committee, they have done just that.

The program features three streams: SME, corporate and hot topics. In addition there are a number of plenaries of more general interest covering topics such as private equity transactions. The Commissioner will deliver his annual address with a focus on the proposed direction of the ATO for the next 12 months. This year he will be accompanied by Bruce Quigley, who will focus on the key technical issues for the ATO in 2008.  Justice Pagone will be presenting the Justice Hill Memorial Lecture, this year focusing on income/capital issues. Who would have thought that this would still be topical in 2008?

A comprehensive social program will showcase South Australia's fine food and wine and allow Members to catch up with old friends and meet new friends.

National events held in South Australia are always remembered by Members for both their technical content and their relaxed, friendly atmosphere and camaraderie. The 2008 Convention is sure to follow this tradition.

We hope that you will join us in making this Convention even more successful than the last.
